You know that feeling you get when you come away from a game and thinking, I can’t believe I just paid to watch that. Well if you can relate to that, they you can probably relate to the pain the Wigan fans were facing on Sunday night. At half time the Latics were 1-0 down and whilst admittedly hadn’t been playing particularly well, thought maybe they were still in with a chance. 45 very painful minutes later Spurs were 9 (yes, nine)-1 up and the away stand at White Hart Lane was more empty than the country’s savings account.

Where did that come from? This time last month Wigan had just recorded a fantastic 3-1 victory over Chelsea, now even Hull and Wolves are mocking their goal difference.

Whilst it is easy to ridicule Wigan’s performance, their player’s actions since have been, in fact very commendable. Members of the squad from Sunday have offered to refund the fans that made the trip to North London, the price of the ticket. Captain Mario Melchiot announced on the club’s official website: “We feel that as a group of players we badly let down our supporters, and this is a gesture we HAVE TO make and pay them back for their tremendous loyalty”.

So what should the Wigan diehards do with their £27.40? Well since the weekend nearly every bookmaker has shortened their price on Wigan to get relegated this season (you can still get 11/2 with Bet365). Latics fans did get a really close look a Tottenham striker Jermaine Defoe who bagged 5 of the 9 goals, unsurprisingly his odds to be the Premiership Top Goalscorer have been slashed, best price is now 7/2 with Ladbrokes.

You would like to think, however that those Wigan fans, loyal enough to follow their team all over the country, (as no doubt the ones who went to Spurs do,) would be eternal optimists, and stick the whole lot on the Latics to win the league at 7500/1 with Boylesports (well maybe go each way).
