As the organisers claim, it is true that the atmosphere at the Cheltenham Festival is quite unique. The crowd is always enthusiastic and the Cheltenham Festival roar as the tape lifts to start the first race is legendary. It is true to say that of all jump festivals the one held at Cheltenham is the favourite amongst race goers as can be witnessed by the size of the crowds it attracts which often exceed 200,000 who travel to the meeting from far and wide.

The festival is steeped in history, and every year it seems that new history is being created as this is the most prestigious of all National Hunt events. It was first held in 1902.

The festival is also famous for the huge amount of money that is wagered over the four days. There is a total of 26 races, and last year over £500 million was bet on them.

Ladies day is on the Thursday and the Friday offers the major highlight of the festival and in fact the whole jump racing season, the Cheltenham Gold Cup which is now sponsored by Totesport. This race dates back to 1904. In 2009 it was won for the second time by Kauto Star beating his stable mate and previous season’s winner Denman.  The race has been associated with many great horses including Desert Orchid and Arkle. One horse that won the race five times was Golden Miller

The Cheltenham Cup has been known to spring a few surprises. In 1990 the race was won by Norton's Coin at 100/1. Over the coming days we will look at some of the races and entrants and try to pick a few winners.
