Bastareaud, who had reportedly tried to commit suicide in 2009 after falsely claiming that he had been assaulted by New Zealand supporters on a night out whilst on tour in Wellington, bounced back in emphatic fashion in Edinburgh, scoring two tries in their opening match of the tournament yesterday.

The performance has put the French, winners in 2007, down at 5/4 favourites across the board to win the tournament, down from a general price of 6/4. The French have also been priced at a best of 3/1 with Skybet to take the Grand Slam, their first since 2004.

Ireland, who comfortably saw off the challenge from likely wooden-spooners Italy with a 29-11 win in Dublin, are available at a best price of 5/2 with Totesport. The Irish are also priced at 15/8 to win the triple crown and 11/2 the Grand Slam – both with Ladbrokes.

England, who scored three tries as they recorded an impressive 30-17 over Wales at Twickenham on Saturday, are priced at a best of 3/1 with William Hill whilst Wales have drifted out to 16/1 across the board.

Scotland are available at 100/1 whilst Italy are at 1000/1.
