Britain has enjoyed some success in past Winter Olympics events, and although we are well behind many countries for which access to winter sports events is easier, some amazing victories have been achieved.

Possibly none more so than in Curling which is a strange game consisting of someone throwing a disc along the ice and the rest of the time skating in front of it and assisting its passage along the ice by frantically brushing in front of its patch. It is a game that in 2002 the nation held its collective breath as a team of valiant Scots ladies won Great Britain a gold.  It was one of those heart warming sporting moments that happen rarely. This year the Women’s’ curling team are the sixth favourites out of ten entrants at 13/1 and the men’s team are the second favourite at 4/1.

Skiing has become popular in the UK but despite this we are relatively poor at the sport compared to nations that have snow and mountains close to hand. It is a shame, because skiing is the highlight of the Winter Olympics with many variations of the sport being on show. Chemmy Alcot is one of the top British entrants but there is little to suggest that he is competitive against the greatest skiers on the planet. Of course nobody will forget Eddie the Eagle who finished last in the 1988 Winter Olympics.

A change from skiing is snowboarding which is a bit like skateboarding on ice. It has become a very popular leisure activity and a bit of an extreme sport. There has always been debate concerning whether or not it is an appropriate sport for the Olympics. There is one British competitor who has risen in the competitor ranks: Zoe Gillings finished in fifteenth place in 2006, but has shown some good form more recently. She won the German National Championships in 2009 and has finished in the top three in several international events. In terms of standing she is ranked about midway in the Cross Country at 50/1 which probably is a very good price to back her at; certainly a top three finish is a possibility.
