Avatar is the favourite for Best Film at 4/6 with Bet Fred and second favourite is The Hurt Locker at 6/4 with Sky Bet. Which is the more worthy movie? James Cameron’s Avatar has certainly broken all box office records, but apart from gimmicks and special effects does the film have any real qualities? Some have said that the film is a sort of alien Titanic, which admittedly won eleven Oscars. Sometimes one is forced to ask oneself “Why?” Avatar has a rating of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, so perhaps it is worth a bet.

The Hurt Locker seems to be a far more worthy film than Avatar. It is concerned with real people in real situations rather than computer generated special effects. It is set in Iraq and tells more about how the war really is than all the war documentaries that have been made about Iraq rolled into one. It concerns a top bomb disposal squad and their experiences. It deals with courage and terror; suspicion and loyalty; paranoia and politics. Shot with a grainy celluloid look, the feeling of the film is visceral. Rotten Tomatoes rate the movie at 97% and it rarely if ever gets better than that. A possible reason why it might not get that best picture Oscar is that it is critical of the USA. At 6/4 it is worth a punt.

Inglorious Basterds is in third place at 25/1 with bet365. Quentin Tarantino has made some good movies; in fact some of his movies are arguably great and in that list we include Pulp Fiction; a breakthrough movie, so what has he now gone and done making this inglorious movie? No doubt it is meant to be provocative, no doubt it is meant to shock, but what it ultimately achieved is boredom; possibly it has more worth than Avatar, but only a little at the best. Rotten Tomatoes likes it; they gave it a rating of 89%.

Our money is on The Hurt Locker; it is definitely the best film of the three. Let’s hope the Oscar Committee agrees.
