This is the second time he has been commended this award, meeting Kenny Dalgleish’s two year run almost 30 years ago. It was awarded on the basis of him achieving a total of 50 goals in 76 games, a record that rested unbroken for 60 years.

The player mentioned this on the prestigious award, “To get to 50 goals was a very proud moment. Liverpool is a team with one of the most successful histories in the world. It is not the same to break records at other clubs”.

Earlier this season it was clear that Torres was capable of reaching such an exemplary standard; the first Liverpool fixture of the season saw him scoring his first two goals for the club, to contribute to a 3-2 defeat of West Ham.

The club’s next fixture was no different story as he acquired his first hat trick to add to the 6-1 defeat of Hull City at home at Anfield.
This sincere and passionate performance led him gain Premier League Player of the Month in September, for scoring 5 goals in a month, and also becoming the Premiership’s top goal scorer.
When considering his early career in Spain, Torres represented somewhat of a prodigy. Evidence of his talent was declared by UEFA when he contributed to his under 16 and 19 clubs acquiring European titles for their home country. Him achieving the European Championship title again in 2008 would then substantiate this evidence.

The most personal recognition he has received of late came from his Spanish forward partner David Villa who has outlined Torres as one of the world’s best players. He recently commented, "A striker with so much quality, such magic and so much experience, despite not having a good year, he is always dangerous and never do you want to face him”.

Torres currently suffers an increasingly lengthy recovery from a serious injury but it is reported that he should be prepared to play soon.
