The London Irish full-back has also been criticised for a lack of form for both club and country this season and will be relieved that he has another chance to show his doubters what he can do.

England's Grand Slam hopes were shattered last week in a 20-16 defeat at the hands of reigning champions Ireland and Armitage was one of the players singled out for criticism after the game.

Armitage is well aware of this criticism and said: "It was a massive relief to be named in the team. I kind of expected not to be in it.

"I haven't had the best Six Nations and after going off injured Ben came on and did a good job off the bench.

"For me to get another shot to try and get back to the form I showed last year is a good opportunity.

"But obviously I need to start showing something. Foden is right there behind, he's been playing really well for his club, and the management and coaching set-up know he's ready.

"I could almost say I'm on my last wheels, this is my last chance.”
England coach has changed none of his backs for this weekend's clash but has decided to alter the forwards, including switching World Cup winner Lewis Moody for Joe Worsley in the back row.

"It was a very tough call. It is not a reflection at all on how Lewis has played," said Johnson.

"It is more of a reflection on the strength and depth of the players we have in the squad.

"We felt it was the best call to put Joe in the starting team and have Lewis on the bench to make an impact.”

England are 8/15 with Ladbrokes to win the match, with Scotland at 6/4 though whatever happens on Saturday England are massive outsiders to win the Six Nations Championship at 14/1.
