As his contract ends within the next the next 6 months, the Frenchman is able talk talk with any club regarding a Bosman style free-transfer and there are, reportedly, several clubs interested in bringing the centre-half in.

Wenger is happy to let things stay as they are for the time being, with Gallas not agreed a new contract as of yet.

"I am not concerned. He is under contract until the 30th of June. We have not found an agreement yet. I meet his agents again next Thursday and we will try to find a solution," said the Arsenal manager.

"I would like to keep all that secret. I feel I have to respect both parties and not to come out about the details of negotiations."

Arsenal have regularly been criticised for their lack of options in defence and with Gallas injured they have had to use veterans Sol Campbell and Mikael Silvestre in his absence.

Gallas himself is 32 years old but despite this is still highly rated and clubs of the stature of Roma have reportedly expressed an interest, although Wenger seems unsure of this link.

Wenger stated: "I do not know if he has spoken to Roma, but he is out of contract and can talk to whom he wants.

"William is speaking to us and our desire is to keep him here.

"I think he wants to stay here."

Any attempt to keep hold of Gallas will surely have been helped by Arsenals magnificent 5-0 victory over Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday that put the club through to the quarter finals.

Arsenal are also still in the hunt for their first Premier League title since 2003, despite a few shakes earlier in the season.

The Gunners are currently 8/1 with Coral to win their first ever European Cup and 11/4 to end Man United's  monopoly on the Premier League title.
