The Spanish keeper was powerless to avoid a 2-1 aggregate defeat despite seeing his side draw in last nights tie at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real have won more European Cups than any other club with nine in total, though their recent record has been less impressive as they have crashed out at this stage in each of the previous six seasons.

An obviously disappointed Casillas stated after the game: “Our defeat at this stage is another body blow, like the one when we lost to Alcorcon in the Copa del Rey,"

"It is difficult to say why these results keep happening, but we have no excuses.

“We believed in our chances this season and this is a hard result to take, for us and the supporters. I personally apologise to the fans for breaking their dreams.”
Despite crashing out of the Champions League yet again, Casillas will feel slightly consoled by the fact that Madrid still have a huge opportunity to regain the La Liga title from their bitter rivals Barcelona
Madrid went top after overturning a two goal deficit against Seville at the weekend and will be confident that their team, which boasts former World Players of the Year Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo, will win their 32nd Spanish title.

Casillas is very clear on the matter.

"The most important thing now is to regroup and fight until the death in the league," he said.

"I am angry not to have made the final of the Champions League (set to be staged at the Bernabeu) but we must now be calm and focus on winning the league."

Real Madrid have been made joint favourites to take home the title at the end of the season with Barcelona with Sportingbet at 19/20 and it will be interesting to see who will be victorious come May.
