Liverpool are currently 6th in the Premiership and are widely expected to notch-up an easy victory against struggling Portsmouth who sit dead-last and are certain for relegation this season. However, they put in an abysmal performance in their last Premiership fixture where they lost 1-0 to Wigan

The Reds defeat to Wigan prompted an outburst from Rafael Benitez, in which he accused his side of lacking both attitude and character;  “I'm really disappointed.

"At half-time we talked about the things we weren't doing well - the attitude and the character. We made too many mistakes and played too quickly." stated the Liverpool boss.

Liverpool have slipped up at a crucial point in the season, failing to shrug off the challenge of both Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, who are looking more than a good bet to replace the Reds as one of the big-four this season.

They have obtained only four points from the last possible twelve, and a win is absolutely essential if they are to maintain any hopes of keeping pace with their rivals who look to be quickly gathering momentum.

Portsmouth have had their worst season on record and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City on Tuesday. They are five points adrift of being clear of relegation but are set to incur a further 9 point deduction after going into administration.

Pompey will be hoping to salvage whatever they can from the rest of this season but with a return to the Championship imminent, they really have nothing left to lose.

The pressure will be squarely on Liverpool as they go into this potentially season de-railing encounter.

Sky Bet, Paddy Power and bet365 have set their odds at 1/4 for Liverpool to beat Portsmouth.
