Pietersen Puts on Great Performance on Day 1 of Bangladesh Test
Kevin Pietersen defied the severe criticisms he has been receiving lately for his lack of form be belting a superb 99 runs on the first day of the first test against Bangladesh. Alistair Cook, leading England for the first time, scored 158 not out after being put in to bat by Bangladesh. At the end of play the score was 374 for 3.
Today was a day in which nobody could have asked more of England, though Kevin Pietersen was disappointed to be bowled by Razzak one run off what would have been his first century for some time. Perhaps he wanted that hundred just a little too much. He played more aggressively that he has for some time and no longer appeared daunted by balls delivered from a left arm spinner.
Alistair Cook’s knock of 158 was achieved off 244 balls and included two superb sixes and fourteen fours. He never seemed out of his comfort zone and appeared to relish the opportunity to lead England from the front.
Jonathan Trott hit 39 off 77 balls which given his recent form was an excellent knock and the way he was dismissed was controversial; it appeared that the ball missed the bat and hit his helmet before being caught by Rahim. Michael Carberry, playing for England for the first time, scored 30 off 51 balls. Collingwood closed the day with 32 runs off 40 balls.
Everyone was surprised when Shakib Al Hasan the Bangladesh captin won the toss and put England in to bat. The pitch was flat and clearly favoured the batting side, though perhaps Al Hasan had thought it might suit his fast bowlers. Clearly the decision was a poor one; England looks like going on to make a high score.
