Paddy Power Refunds Bets On Massa After Ferrari Farce
Paddy Power has confirmed that it will be refunding all outright bets on Felipe Massa to win yesterday’s German Grand Prix after the Brazilian allegedly missed out on victory to yet another “team orders” scandal.
The Irish bookie is refunding all in-running and pre-race bets on Massa to take the chequered flag this weekend up to a maximum of £/€1,000, with hundreds of punters receiving refunds totalling more than £15,000.
Controversy surrounded yesterday’s Grand Prix at Hockenheim after race leader Felipe Massa received what appeared to be a coded radio message from his pit crew to allow Alonso, who has a higher standing in the championship, to pass and take the win.
The claim was denied by Ferrari, who claimed that Massa was struggling with his tyres despite lap times suggesting there was little problem, as parallels were drawn with the Schumacher-Barrachello finish in Austria in 2002.
In a blog post, Paddy Power claimed: “Due to the farcical team orders handed out by Ferrari to allow Alonso pass race leader Felipe Massa, we’ve decided the only fair thing to do is refund bets on the Brazilian. Hopefully it will please our F1 punters!
“We’ve refunded in excess of £15,000 to hundreds of punters who backed Massa in good faith. Getting their money back won’t right the wrong, but it might make it easier to swallow.”
Paddy Power is offering 10/3 on Alonso, the beneficiary from yesterday's events, to win the driver's championship.
