Sir Alex Ferguson lavished praised on the 35-year-old midfielder after he put on a passing masterclass to provide assists for the Red Devil's first and third goals, giving the side the three points that they wanted to start their 2010/11 Premiership campaign.

Ferguson spoke highly of Scholes, who has been with Manchester United for his entire 17-year long career, saying: "Anyone who gets to that age and retains that appetite is blessed with something special."

"He's got a marvellous passing range and vision," added Ferguson.

The match saw Ferguson's side totally dominate, with goals from Dimitar Berbatov and Ryan Fletcher.

Ryan Giggs also got himself on the score sheet, and also seems intent to show the younger generation that he is still well worthy of playing in the top flight.

However, it was undeniably Scholes, the veteran who has won nine league titles with the club and made over 400 appearances, who ultimately stole the show.

"The game always needs players like that," Ferguson added.

"There are still a lot of good players in the game and tonight Scholes produced."

The performance will also undoubtedly play on England manager Fabio Capello's mind, as he is left to wonder how influential the midfielder could have been if had accepted his invitation to join the squad in the recent South African World Cup.

Manchester United will face Fulham in their next Premier League fixture, with Sky Bet, offering 11/2 odds of Fulham beating Ferguson's side, while Stan James and Ladbrokes set their odds at 9/2.
