Things could not have gone worse for Alonso In Belgium as he spun off the track, while McLaren rival Lewis Hamilton picked up the win.

To make matters worse Red Bull's Mark Webber took second place, giving another of the main title challengers much needed points.

The Spaniard is now 41 points behind Hamilton who in turn sits 3 points ahead of Webber.

There are only six races left this season but Alonso remains optimistic and defiant, saying: I am convinced we still have a significant chance.

"There are 150 points up for grabs, enough to turn the situation around. We must remain calm and concentrate and try and make up the difference."

The Belgium Grand Prix didn't go to plan for everybody though, as defending world champion Jenson Button also failed to finish after the race following a collision with Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel.

The crash left Button with a sore temper which he vented after the race by accusing the 23-year-old German driver of being 'too accident prone' to stand any realistic chance of winning the world championship.

Next week has the potential to be no better for Ferrari as they will find out whether the World Motor Sport Council disciplinary hearing will have any impact on their championship bid.

This comes after they broke regulations by ordering Felipe Massa to let Alonso overtake him at the German Grand Prix in order to take a controversial first place.

Victor Chandler, Paddy Power and Blue SQ offer 7/2 odds that Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel will win this years F1 drivers' championship.
