The strain of the match was all too clear and the American's frustrations bubbled their way to the surface as he berated a line judge for an alleged mistake.

The Serb won the match 3-6 7-5 6-3 7-6 (7-4) with Roddick failing to respond in an significant way to the innovative shot-making of his opponent, who seemed to find a gap through all of his defences.

Roddick appeared to be stumped as to why he had lost, claiming he could not put his finger on exactly why he had failed to perform, although he did concede that he may have become too hung up on the incident with the line judge which could have gone some way too distracting the world number 9.

"I wasn't upset with the call, I just expect my umpires to know their left foot from the right foot," admitted Roddick.

The twenty-eight year old went on to vent his frustration at the apparent incompetence of the match officials.

"It's the fact I couldn't get her to admit it wasn't the right foot which infuriated me, the lack of common sense was unbelievable to me. We have got to be able to have a test like 'Point to your right foot, point to your left foot, now call lines'.” complained the American.

Meanwhile, Britain holds on to hope of Andy Murray taking his first Grand Slam as he defeated Lukas Lacko to continue his US Open campaign.

BetFred and Stan James offer 11/4 odds that Murray will emerge victorious at the US Open in New York, while bet365 set their odds at 5/2.
