The Cricket Season Ends - Nottingham Wins County Championship
Unfortunately the cricket season has come to an end. It all seemed too brief though in fact it had been a little extended. There has been no more compelling finale to the season than this one and right up until the end the championship could have gone one of several ways. Finally it was Nottingham which took the honours, but only by an edge.
It had been imperative that Nottingham gathered some points in their match against Lancashire at Old Trafford and they did so shortly before 5.00 pm when Samit Patel held a slip catch edged by Lancashire's Shivnarine Chanderpaul. This handed Nottingham a vital bonus point which gave them, including three from the drawn match, a total of four points.
Somerset needed a win against Durham at Chester-le-Street but that too ended in a draw thus Somerset ended up with the same number of points, 214, as Nottingham. However as the latter had won seven times compared to Somerset’s six the County Championship went to Nottingham.
Yorkshire finished in third place with 203 points and Essex finishes last of the nine teams with 126 points.
Although the season has ended, there is much to look forward to in cricket during the coming months. The Ashes series in Australia gets underway in November and Australia is the favourite at 8/11 with Sky Bet, Stan James and Sportingbet to regain the ashes, though England fans can bet on their side at 27/10 with Bwin.
