Wayne Rooney nets the best goal of his career
Manchester United star striker Wayne Rooney has been hailing what he described as the best goal of his career to date.
Rooney received a top cross from team-mate Nani, which he fired in with a right-footed volley into the top corner of the goal from 15 yards out. The goal would have been a highlight of most players careers, however, this was made extra special by the fact that it gave Sir Alex Ferguson's side a 2-1 victory against rivals Manchester City in their derby match.
The United striker was clearly overjoyed with his efforts and said: "As soon as I hit it, I knew it was in and it's definitely the best goal I've scored,
"It was a special feeling. The fans deserve that from me because I've not had the best of seasons."
The goal that earned United a victory over their long-standing rivals has also gone a long way towards bolstering their chances of winning the Premier League, taking them a clear seven points ahead of the rest of the pack at the top of the table.
The goal has also earned Rooney some high praise from Ferguson, who described the goal as both “stunning” and “unbelievable”.
"We've had some fantastic goals here but in terms of execution, you'll never see that." added the Red Devil's boss.
Even City boss Roberto Mancini was quick to acknowledge Rooney's superb strike, admitting that it was a truly “fantastic” goal.
"Wayne Rooney can change every game because he is a fantastic player," said the Italian manager.
Despite this, Mancini did not agree that his side deserved to lose the match, describing the outcome of the game as “unlucky”.
With Manchester United currently sitting at the top of the table, Stan James, Sky Bet and Coral all offer 9/4 odds that Arsene Wenger's Arsenal will be able to win the 2010/11 Premier League title.
